Katchimana, Josephine Zeena – Open Bowl with Flower Katsina (1960s)

8"w x 3"h

$ 200.00

Josephine “Katchimana” Zeena was from Walpi on First Mesa, Hopi. She began making pottery in the 1960s.  This open bowl is painted on the inside with a Flower Katsina, Rainclouds, and a Sikyatki style bird.  It is painted with bee-weed (black) and highlighted with both red and white clay slips.  The bowl was traditionally fired.  It is a complex design in the center of the bowl.  The outside of the bowl is fully polished and the piece was traditionally fired outside with the resulting fire-clouds. It is signed on the bottom, “Josephine Katchimana”.  It is in good condition with some firing slip cracks on the base of the bowl, which is not uncommon from this time period.
