Komalestewa, Emily Shupla – Bowl with Eagle Tail Designs (1951)

7"w x 5.5"h

$ 200.00

Emily Shupla was married to Austin Komalestewa (who was a son of William Lessou and a grandson of Nampeyo of Hano).  They had twelve children.  She was the sister of Kenneth Shupla, who married Helen Shupla of Santa Clara Pueblo.  Their youngest son was Alton Komalestewa, a noted Hopi potter.  This bowl is from 1951.  It is coil built and stone polished. There are eagle tails on each side of the bowl.  They are painted with bee-weed and there is some fugitive black slip (i.e. it was probably painted on too thick and came off over time or after firing). The red areas are stone polished and the bowl was traditionally fired.  It is signed, “Emily Komalestewa”.  It is good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
