Leno, Juana – Water Jar with Fineline Interlocking Stars (1970s)

8"w x 7"h

$ 1,050.00

Juana Leno is one of the four revivalist matriarchs of contemporary Acoma pottery (including Marie Z. Chino, Lucy Lewis, and Jessie Garcia). She was a daughter of Lupita and Jose Vallo and learned to make pottery from her grandmother Eulilia Vallo.  This is a classic Acoma style water jar.  It has a series of interlocking stars around the neck and then larger ones around the sides.  Note how each eight-sided star connects to the four-sided star.  Typically, Juana has used the shape of the vessel to match her desigsn.  The jar was traditionally fired, which gives it the coloration on the surface. It is signed on the bottom, “Juana Leno”. It is in excellent condition and a creative piece of pottery by this important Acoma Pueblo potter!
