Lewis, Lorraine Gala – “Chaco Vessel” Jar

6"w x 8"h

$ 600.00

Lorraine Gala Lewis learned to make pottery at IAIA and from Nathan Begaye.  Her work focuses on pre-contact forms and designs, which she uses as a source of inspiration.  Each piece is coil built, painted, fired and then textured to give it a more historic appearance. This piece is inspired by the cups found at Chaco Canyon. The low, wide shoulder and elongated sides are a striking shape, along with the handle.  The piece is painted with complicated checkerboard corn and lightning designs.  It is intriguing to see how the designs she revives are still used today by so many potters from Acoma, Laguna and other pueblos. The bowl is titled, “Chaco Vessel”.  It is signed on the bottom.
