Lewis, Lucy – Jar with Acoma Bird Design (1980s)
Lucy Lewis is one of the great Matriarch potters of the past century. This bowl is from the 1980s. It is a very traditional Acoma design. The bowl has four birds painted extending downward. The birds heads are slipped red while the bodies are painted with bee-weed (black). Note how the bodies have the straight lines and then the rain and lightning designs around the rim. For a smaller piece, it is very tightly painted! It is signed on the bottom, “Lucy M. Lewis”. It is in excellent condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair.
