Lewis, Lucy – Large Jar with Mountain and Lightning Designs (1970s)
This large jar is by Lucy M. Lewis. It is one of her classic pieces from the 1970s. The jar has a classic Acoma shape with a high shoulder and short neck. The piece is fully painted. There is a mountain design around the neck. The body of the jar has a stylized version of the lightning pattern for which she is famous. The base of the jar is slipped with red clay, creating the “sunrise”. The bottom of the jar is also indented int the classic Acoma style. The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay. It always amazes me that she was self-taught and was able to create such extraordinary pottery through just examining historic Acoma and then later, Mimbres, pottery. This jar is signed on the bottom, “Lucy M. Lewis”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is certainly one of her classics in shape and design!
