Lewis, Mary – Plate with Mimbres Turtles

4.5" diameter

$ 175.00

Mary Lewis was a daughter of noted potter Lucy M. Lewis.  This is one of the few pieces of her work we have had in the gallery.  She was never as prolific as her sisters Emma, Dolores, and Carmel. The plate has three Mimbres turtles as the design.  The turtle in the center has a checkerboard pattern.  Potters from Acoma began using Mimbres iconography in the 1960s.  The Mimbres pottery was made in the 1100s in southern New Mexico.  It is signed on the back, “Mary D. Lewis”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
