Lewis, Nancy – Tall Jar with Bird Tail Designs (1960’s)

4"w x 7.5"h

$ 325.00

Nancy Lewis was a Hopi potter from the First Mesa village Sichomovi. She was actively making pottery between 1960-1980. Her pottery is in the collection of the Museum of Northern Arizona. This canister is slipped with white clay.  It is intricately painted with four panels of design.  The sections have birds and bird tails.  Note the intricate line work in the designs! The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and a red clay slip.  What you can’t see is that the entire piece is fully polished on the inside as well!  The jar was traditionally fired so there are slight blushes on the surface.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  There are some areas of fugitive black where it was not painted on heavily enough before firing.  It is signed on the bottom, “Nancy Lewis”.
