Lonewolf, Joseph – “Cottontail” Seedpot with Card (1988)

1 1/8"w x 1.25"h

$ 1,800.00

Beginning in the early 1970s, Joseph Lonewolf revolutionized the world of Santa Clara pottery by incorporating his sgraffito (lightly etching the surface of the clay) and incised (more deeply cut into the clay) designs.  This seedpot is from 1988 and it is fully designed. The piece has a realistic cottontail rabbit on one side and an Antelope Jackrabbit.  The piece has the 1988 yearly symbol, which is a bear paw.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Joseph Lonewolf” and has one of the original cards which he would type for each piece.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

On the card, Joseph wrote in part:

“A cottontail adorns this clay creation.  Opposite is a leaping Antelope Jackrabbit.  Beneath the rabbit is the medallioned area depicting the 1988 yearly symbol of a “bear Paw” – strength and good medicine.  To the left is a sketched butterfly denoting beauty”. Joseph Lonewolf
