Lonewolf, Joseph – “Feathered Water Serpent” Red Lidded Jar (2000)

1"w x 2"h (w/ lid)

$ 2,700.00

Joseph Lonewolf began making pottery in 1970-1.  His is one of his few later lidded pieces.  The jar is entitled, “Feathered Water Serpent”.  He said of his piece:

The feathered water serpent was transmitted to Joseph in the form of dreams and visions by his ancestors of centuries ago.  Depicted against a buff-colored background is the ancient design of the guardian of all – a feathered water serpent.  Breathing a bolt of life from his mouth, the avanyu ensures that all living forms will take in food, get energy, grow, and adapt themselves to their surroundings.  The red polished area represents “Mother Earth”.   The globe-shaped lid represents the earth.”

The jar is fully polished red and has a complex avanyu encircling the piece.  Around the neck is a wave design. The lid is red and matte.  Interestingly, Joseph made lidded pieces early in his career, and then a series of them again around 2000.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joseph Lonewolf”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic of Joseph’s early pottery style!
