Beginning in the early 1970s, Joseph Lonewolf revolutionized the world of Santa Clara pottery by incorporating his sgraffito (lightly etching the surface of the clay) and incised (more deeply cut into the clay) designs.  This seedpot is from 1988 and it is fully designed. The piece has a realistic Mountain Goat on one side.  It is surrounded by a blue sky and a plant off to the side. Behind the Mountain Goat are “pathways of life and destiny” in white and red clay slips. There is a small etched butterfly near the base which represents a symbol of beauty and the red clay which is undesigned represents “mother earth”.  The piece has the bear paw yearly symbol for 1988.  Can you see it? It is almost hidden right below the front legs of the Moutain Goat!  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Joseph Lonewolf” and has one of the original cards which he would type for each piece.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
