Lonewolf, Joseph – Polychrome Seedpot with Mimbres Quail, Bird, and Butterfly (1986)

1 1/8"w x 1"h

$ 1,100.00

Beginning in the early 1970’s, Joseph Lonewolf revolutionized the world of Santa Clara pottery by incorporating his sgraffito (lightly etching the surface of the clay) and incised (more deeply cut into the clay) designs.  This is a small seedpot that is fully polished and designed. The piece has at least SIX different colors of clay used to accentuate the designs. Joseph would etch all the designs before the piece was fired.  There is a Mimbres-style quail on one side and a bird and butterfly on the opposite side.  Below the quail are plant designs.  The base of the seedpot is slipped red and highly polished with a realistic butterfly. There is also a heart medallion, which is the yearly symbol for 1986.  The precision of the designs and the shine of the polished surface create a perfect balance.  This piece is in perfect condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Joseph Lonewolf”.
