Lonewolf, Joseph – Red & Black Bowl with Three Wolf Tracks (1970-1)

4.5"w x 3"h

$ 2,500.00

Joseph Lonewolf began making pottery in 1970-1.  This is a very early piece of his pottery.  It is not just the unique firing that makes it special, but the design.  The firing is one where he created a “red and black” coloration at the end of the firing process before the manure was added to turn the piece black.  This coloration is a striking one that he only did early in his career.  The bowl has three wolf tracks etched into the clay.  All of his designs were etched into the clay before the firing.  I’ve had one other piece from the same time that was black-and-red and had the wolf track design.  It seems to be the “introduction” of the “Lone Wolf” to the art world!   The precision of the designs and the shine of the polished surface create a perfect balance.  This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joe Lonewolf” and the wolf head hallmark.  This may be the only piece I’ve ever had of his that is signed in this manner.
