Lucas, Eleanor – Canteen with Eagle Tails

4"w x 4"h

$ 500.00

This is one of the few pieces we have ever seen by Eleanor Lucas (b. 1930).  She is the mother of Steve Lucas and a sister of Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo.  Eleanor is descendant of Nampeyo of Hano through her daughter Annie Healing.  This canteen is highly polished and painted with an eagle tail design on the front.  The design is highlighted with a deep red clay slip.  The canteen was traditionally fired.  The piece is signed on the back, “E. Lucas”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  The last photo is one that I took of Eleanor (left) and Dextra (right) at Dextra’s house when I was writing “Spoken Through Clay”.
