This is one of the few pieces we have ever seen by Karen Lucas (b. 1959).  She is a sister of Steve Lucas and a daughter of Eleanor Lucas.  She is a niece of noted potter Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo.  Karen is a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano through her daughter Annie Healing.  This bowl is inspired by the famous “shard bowl” by Dextra Quotskuyva (see last photo).  It is stone polished and painted with bee-weed.  There are various shard designs encompassing the entire surface.  They are highlighted with an additional white clay.  It is signed on the bottom, “K. Lucas”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  I have a note that it was published in the “Nampeyo of Hano” exhibition at Adobe Gallery (image #40), but I don’t have a copy of the catalog.
