Lucas, Steve – Eagles and Eagle Tails Polychrome Jar

6.5"w x 4.5"h

$ 1,500.00

This is a charming jar by Steve Lucas.  He remains one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today.  Each piece is coil built, stone polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black), and traditionally fired.  Steve has won “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market and his work remains some of the most refined and creative.  This jar has a sharp shoulder and it is fully polished.  There are eagles and eagle tails as designs.  The piece is painted with bee-weed and various clay slips. The dark brown is his most recent addition and it adds a new depth of color to his pottery.  The jar was traditionally fired so there are blushes and fire-clouds on the surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).  Spectacular!
