Lucas, Steve – Jar with Hummingbird and and Mesa Designs

10"w x 5.5"h

$ 3,000.00

Steve Lucas is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today.  Each piece is coil built, stone polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black) and traditionally fired.  Steve has won “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market and his work remains some of the most refined and creative.  This jar is one of his classic shapes. The design is a hummingbird on each side.  Separating them are flowers.  Above each bird is a sun design and below the Hopi mesas.  Steve has used red, green, brown and yellow clay slips to highlight the designs.  These colors are polished and create a striking contrast to the black bee-weed patterns.  The piece was traditionally fired creating elegant blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).
