Lucas, Steve – Large Bowl with Butterfly Designs

11"w x 8.5"h

$ 5,800.00

This is a spectacular large bowl by Steve Lucas.  He is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today.  Each piece is coil built, stone polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black) and traditionally fired.  Steve has won “Best of Show” at Santa Fe Indian Market and his work remains some of the most refined and creative.  This bowl is a large, round shape. It is fully painted and has four butterflies as the design on the top.  Each of the butterflies is different.  Separating them is a stylized butterfly design with brown polished wings.  Below the shoulder are flower patterns which encircle the piece.  Steve has used red, brown and yellow clay slips to highlight the designs.  These colors are polished and create a striking contrast to the black bee-weed patterns.  The piece was traditionally fired creating elegant blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).
