Steve Lucas is masterful in his use of traditional forms and designs and yet modernizing them to his own distinctive style. This large jar has a classic shape with a wide shoulder and a slight neck. The design is the classic eagle tail pattern which extends down from the neck. This style and design were revived by Namepyo of Hano. The jar has taken the same concept but used the Red Tail Hawk as the bird for the tail design. There is a very linear and geometric style to this design, which is a nice contrast to the shape of the jar.  It is polished with a deep red clay slip, which has bits of mica in clay.  The black is bee-weed (a plant).  The base of the jar is also fully polished with the red micaceous clay.  There are slight color variations from the firing.  signed on the bottom with his name and an ear of corn (Corn Clan) and a Mudhead Katsina.
