Manymules, Samuel – Water Jar with Indented Shoulder

6.5"w x 6"h

$ 1,250.00

This is a classic water jar by Samuel Manymules.  The jar is coil-built, slipped with red clay, and then traditionally fired.  The jar has a round shoulder that indents downward before extending up to the neck.  This “dip” creates striking shadows on the jar.  The rim is just slightly tuned out.  The traditional firing has created strong colorations on the jar with areas from black to deep red.  The flow from the neck to the ribs is especially striking.   After the firing, the jar is covered with pinon pitch in the traditional style expected of Navajo pottery.  The jar is signed on the bottom.  It is extraordinary vessels like this that keeps Samuel among the top Navajo potters working today.
