Historic
This is a spectacular large red plate by Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da (1923-1971). Maria made and polished the plate, and it was painted by Popovi. Popovi focused on both the painted surfaces of the pottery and the firings. The piece is painted with 48 painted feathers. It is one of the largest redware plates we have had by Maria. It is always difficult to find plates over 12″, as they cracked in the drying and firing. Firing them red is more difficult than firing them black, as there is less time to get them to just the right coloration and not have it over-fire. This plate is fired a deep red coloration. The plate is signed on the back in the clay, “Maria / Popovi”. This indicates it was made before the use of firing dates, so from 1956-9. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Pieces this size and coloration are always scarce and a great addition to any collection!
