Martinez, Maria – Candlesticks (1920’s), “Marie”

It is not often that we come across candlesticks by Maria Martinez.  They are from 1923-5.  These early pieces are signed, “Marie”, although Julian was painting the designs.  It was not until around 1925 that they began to sign both names to the pottery.   These candlesticks are fully polished and painted around the neck with a mountain pattern.  They are fired a deep black in coloration.  Items like candlesticks were often made for the tourists coming to the PUeblo or the Curio shops in Santa Fe and Taos.  Because they were often used, they are typically not in very good condition.  These are both in very good condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair.  One has a small chip near the top of the rim but no unexpected over nearly 100 years!   They are both signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie”.  They are certainly an amazing part of history and the story of Maria and San Ildefonso pottery!
