Martinez, Maria – Gunmetal Jar with Seed Design “Maria Popovi 962”

4"w x 3"h

$ 2,500.00

This jar is a classic small jar by Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da. Maria made and polished the jar while it was painted by her son, Popovi Da  (1923-1971). The jar is highly polished and has a seed and cloud design.  The seeds (the two half circles) are separated by a rain pattern.  The jar has a wonderful gunmetal appearance to the surface from the firing.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria Popovi 962“. The signature indicates the firing date of September 1962.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

“He [Popovi Da] helped me get the clay over the mountains. He’s the one that mix the clay, and I make the pot, and then fix them the way he wants the top. And then I fix them and he sandpaper, and I smooth them and then polish them. And he put the design.” Maria Martinez, 1977, Spoken Through Clay
