Martinez, Maria – Gunmetal Water Jar with Avanyu (Maria Popovi 1162)
This is a tall water shoulder jar by Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da. Maria made and polished the jar while it was painted by her son, Popovi Da (1923-1971). The jar is highly polished and has the classic water serpent (avanyu) painted around the shoulder. This particular shape is one of her more elegant forms with the round body and elongated neck. The firing is quite stunning with the “splashes” of gunmetal across the surface of the piece. The gunmetal or silvery appearance is a style of firing made famous by Maria and Popovi Da. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria Popovi 1162“. The signature indicates that it was made in November, 1962. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
