Martinez, Maria – Jar with Rain, Cloud, and Lightning Designs (1920’s), “Marie”

7.5"w x 4.5"h

$ 2,000.00

This is an early wide-shoulder jar by Maria Martinez. It is from 1920-25 and it was made and polished by Maria Martinez and painted by her husband, Julian Martinez.  It was not until around 1925 that they began to sign both names to the pottery.  The jar is fully polished and has a matte base.  The design is a series of four clouds, rain, and lightning patterns.  They are painted to utilize the polished surface as part of the design.  There are small dots and other details that are most often seen in Julian’s early painting on the pottery.  The jar was fired to a glossy black coloration.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie”. Definitely a classic in shape and complicated design
