Martinez, Maria – Plainware Jar “Maria Poveka”, 1950’s

5"w x 5"h

$ 1,600.00

In the 1950s Maria Martinez created a series of pieces which were simply stone polished with no design.  As she primarily made and polished the pottery throughout her career this was fitting.  It also makes these pieces stand alone and focus on form and polish.  This jar has a tall shape and it is fully polished.  It was fired to a deep black with small areas that are almost gunmetal.  The jar is signed in the clay, “Maria Poveka”.  This is a combination of her Anglo and Tewa names.  Her name, “Poveka” means “Water Lilly”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
