Martinez, Maria – Red Jar with Plant and Seed Design “Marie + Julian” (1930’s)
This is an unusual red jar by Maria Martinez and her husband, Julian Martinez. Maria would make the pottery and Julian would paint the design. The jar is very highly polished and painted with a matte clay layer on the red polished surface. Interestingly, while the black-on-black style was created around 1919, the red ware was not introduced until around 1925. This jar is painted with one of their classic designs. There are plant and seed designs on each side. Note the intricacy of the painting with the small dots. Separating the plants are prayer feather designs that run vertically. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie + Julian”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Definitely an important piece of history!
