Martinez, Santana & Adam – 10″ Wide Large Cornmeal Bowl (1970s)

10.5"w x 4.5"h

$ 3,000.00

WOW!  This is an extraordinary large cornmeal bowl by Santana and Adam Martinez. Adam was a son of Maria Martinez and he worked with his wife, Santana. Santana was a nice of noted potter Tonita Roybal and the sister of Awa Tsireh (Alfonso Roybal).  They married in 1926 and made pottery together from the 1950s through the late 1990s. This large piece is in the shape of a classic cornmeal bowl with the terraces in four sections.  The entire surface on the inside and outside is fully polished. This is always a challenge as polishing both can cause a piece to crack.  The piece is highly polished and fired to a near gunmetal coloration creating a silvery coloration.  The bowl is signed on the bottom, “Santana + Adam”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is one of the only cornmeal bowls I have seen of their pottery.  It is not just a spectacular shape but a piece that is equally phenomenal in person!
