Medicine Flower, Grace & Camillio Tafoya – Red and Black Medallions Bowl with Avanyu (1973-4)

5.25"w x 3"h

$ 800.00

This is a detailed collaborative bowl by Grace Medicine Flower and her father, Camilio Tafoya.  It is from around 1972-3.  It was fired “black-and-red”.  It is a distinctive firing technique where areas of the piece (here, small medallions) are covered before the manure is put onto the vessel to turn it black.  The bowl was made by Camilio and polished by Grace. She would then etch the designs into the clay before it was fired.  The bowl has an avanyu encircling the top half of the piece.  There are three medallions that are red in coloration.  Two have Rainbow Yei figures as the design. The third one has a Sun Face with a tablita.  The bowl has a silvery-black coloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower and Camilio Tafoya”.   It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
