Medicine Flower, Grace – Jar with Eight Mimbres Animals (1983)

5"w x 3"h

$ 2,200.00

Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This wide-shoulder jar is from 1983.  The piece is fully polished and fully etched.  Grace would always etch her designs before the piece was fired.  The jar has four medallions on the top, each with a different Mimbres animal.  There is a fish, Ram, frog, and rabbit.  They are surrounded by swirling etched flower and lightning designs.  On the bottom, there are a frog, lizard, dragonfly, and quail.  Each medallion here is also surrounded by lightly etched designs.  The intensity of the designs and the creative shape of the wide shoulder and short neck, work perfectly on this piece!  The jar was traditionally fired red.  Grace always had an eye on the complete composition of a piece and made sure it was not just aesthetically pleasing but also technically precise.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
