Medicine Flower, Grace – Seedpot with Bighorn Sheep and Moon (1986)
This seedpot by Grace Medicine Flower is from 1986. It is fully polished and both carved and etched with designs. The central design is a bighorn sheep in front of a moon. The moon is deeply carved into the clay and then etched with small circles. Surrounding the Bighorn are plants and a feather design. Near the base is a very intricate feather and cloud pattern. Note the additional use of blue, green, and white clay slips. These were slips given to Grace by her brother Joseph Lonewolf. She only used them for a short time and then when she ran out she no longer had these colors on her pottery. However, they created a dynamic appearance in her work for a few years. Interestingly, Grace would always etch her pottery before it was fired. It is a classic seedpot in both form and design. Theis signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks restoration or repair.
