Spectacular!  This is an exceptional large jar by Elizabeth and Marcellus Medina.  Elizabeth Medina is known for the traditional style of Zia pottery.  Each piece is coil built, painted with native clays and native fired.  This jar is painted by her husband, Marcellus Medina.  This jar has creative imagery that flows across the surface.  There are two large images, one is an old Zia style Hummingbird with a flower and the other is an old Zia style Butterfly. They are large images and painted with a variety of designs.  Separating these two images are realistic hummingbird and butterflies.  Marcellus is masterful at realistic painting with native clay slips.  There are subtle shadings and colorations with the various clays.  Below the butterflies and hummingbirds are clouds and near the base Zia birds.  The base is painted red and the jar is signed on the side, “Elizabeth + Marcellus Medina, Zia”.  It’s great to see such a large vessel with creative and distinctive imagery by these two premiere Zia potters.
