Medina, Elizabeth & Marcellus – Large Jar with Butterfly, Corn, and Buffalo Dancers

8"w x 9"h

$ 600.00

This is a detailed jar by Elizabeth Medina and her husband Marcellus Medina.  Elizabeth is known for her traditional style of Zia pottery.  Each piece is coil built, painted with native clays, and native fired.  This jar was made by Elizabeth and intricately painted by her husband, Marcellus Medina.  Marcellus is certainly at his best when he is reviving historic Zia styles and painting Zia Pueblo dancers.  The jar has three figures painted onto the surface.  There is a Butterfly Maiden, Corn Maiden, and Buffalo Maiden.  Each is depicted in their traditional dress for the particular dance.  Next to each of them are classic Zia eagle feather designs.  Separating the dances are clouds and vertical lines representing rain.  Around the neck are cloud beings and Zia birds.  It is definitely an unusual and complex design for the neck of the jar!  The jar is signed on the side “Elizabeth + Marcellus Medina, Zia”.
