Medina, Marcellus – Jar with Buffalo, Apache and Pueblo Dancers

7.5"w x 8.25"h

$ 750.00

This is an exceptional white on black jar by Marcellus Medina.  He is known for contemporary painted pottery.  The jar is made by his wife, Elizabeth Medina.  Marcellus has painted on the surface with acrylic. It is a larger jar for his acrylic painting, but it also gives him more space for his exceptional imagery.  This “white-on-black” style was made famous by Rafael Medina (his father) and JD Medina (his uncle) in the 1970s.  While they would paint colorful pieces using acrylic, these more subdued styles are often more difficult as it is more tonal variations to create the scenes.  The jar has a Buffalo Dancer, A Pueblo Dancer, and an Apache Gahn Dancer.  They are very intricately painted.  However, check out the rain cloud designs which separate each dancer!  They are tightly painted creating a face with the clouds.  This style is simply Marcellus at his painterly best!  The jar is signed on the side, “M. Medina 2004”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
