Medina, Marcellus – Jar with Eagle Dancer and Pubelo Dancers

7"w x 7.5"h

$ 700.00

This is a striking white on black jar by Marcellus Medina.  He is known for contemporary painted pottery.  The jar is made by his wife, Elizabeth Medina.  Marcellus has painted on the surface with acrylic. It is a larger jar for his acrylic painting, but it also gives him more space for his exceptional imagery.  This “white-on-black” style was made famous by Rafael Medina (his father) and JD Medina (his uncle) in the 1970s.  While they would paint colorful pieces using acrylic, these more subdued style are often more difficult as it is more tonal variations to create the scenes.  The jar has an Eagle Dancer, Comanche Dancer and a Pueblo Dancer.  They are separated by traditional Zia designs.  Note the exceptional detail in the figures.  That is Marcellus at his best!  The jar is signed on the side, “M. Medina + E. Medina 2003”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
