Rafael Medina (1929-1998) Teeyacheena was the father of noted potter Marcellus Medina.  He was known for his traditional Zia paintings of Pueblo Dancers.  Rafael’s painting style was mostly the flat traditional style first encouraged by Dorothy Dunn, the influential teacher at the Santa Fe Indian School.  He was also known for painting on the pottery of Sofia Medina in the 1970s.  This painting is entitled, “Eagle Dance”. It is an original gouache watercolor.  He has depicted a Zia Eagle Dancer in the center.  Note the detail in the feathers and dance skirt.  There is a sun design in the upper right corner.  It is signed “Rafael Medina” in the lower with.  It is dated on the back.  It is in excellent condition.  It has a matte but no frame.
