WOW!  This is one of the most complex pieces we have had by Sofia and Lois Medina.  Sofia Medina and her daughter Lois Medina were known for the traditional style of Zia pottery.  Each piece was coil built, painted with native clays and native fired. This jar has a classic Zia shape with a high shoulder.  On two sections it is painted with birds under a rainbow. The opposite two sides have the Zia sun medallion with a bird in the center.  Note all the sections that are polished and the various colors. There is a light brown, dark brown, red, white and black.  As well, the jar is precision painted.  SImply stunning.  Did you know that Zia potters use basalt as their temper for the clay, which gives these pieces their stability but also weight.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the side, “Sofia + Lois Medina”.
