Ty Moquino is the 20-year-old son of noted potter Jennifer Tafoya.  This is one of his new clay masks.  They are inspired by the science fiction he has read, along with being a commentary on the environment, sustainability, and Indigenous Futurism.  This mask is entitled, “Allegory”.  The mask has tightly polished ridges along with micaceous and matte slipped areas.  There are small incised dots, slipped red, along with the background area of the note.  The title asks if it is an allegory of past events, or for potents of the future.  The piece was traditionally fired and we had a metal museum mount made for it so that it will stand as a sculpture.  It is great to see new work from his young potter.  Ty won the “Best of Youth” award at the Heard Museum Indian Market in 2017 for one of his masks!  It is signed on the back, “Ty”.
