Moquino, Ty – “thangpiye/East”, Clay Mask with Gold Leaf

4"w x 6.25"h

$ 1,200.00

Ty Moquino is the 19-year-old son of noted potter Jennifer Tafoya.  This is one of his clay masks.  They are inspired by the science fiction he has read, along with being a commentary on the environment, sustainability, and certainly part of the Indigenous Futurism movement.  This mask is entitled, “thangpiye” in Tewa, or “East” is part of a directional series. The mask is carved and has stone polished areas in contrast with matte sections.  The two diamond-shaped areas on the top of the mask have gold leafing.  It is a striking piece as part of his mask series. It is great to see new work from his young potter.  Ty won the “Best of Youth” award at the Heard Museum Indian Market in 2017 for one of his masks!  It is signed on the back.  A museum mount can be made for this piece for an additional charge.
