Naha, Helen “Featherwoman” – Jar with Eagle Tail Design (1970’s)
This jar is by Helen “Featherwoman” Naha is a classic Hopi-Tewa cylinder shape. It has tall sides and a slightly turned in rim. The jar is slipped with white clay and then painted with bee-weed and a red clay. The red clay used on the rim of the piece is typical of her style from the early 1970s. The sides have four eagle tails extending downward. It is a striking balance of form and design. The jar is signed on the bottom with a feather, which was Helen’s hallmark. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. The jar was traditionally fired, so there are slight variations in color on the surface.
