Naha, Rainy – Jar with Longhair Mana Katsinas

8.5"w x 4"h

$ 2,400.00

Rainy Naha is well known for her creative and intricately designed pottery.  This jar is a new design for her with two Longhair Mana figures.  She said she discovered the design of the Longhair Mana or  Angak’china Mana from an old Hopi tile!  The figure is grinding corn.  The Longhair Mana is one of the favorites of the Hopi katsinas, as

“she is the singer of sweet songs who brings rain and flowers.  Her purpose is to bring rain, and it is said that she seldom dances without the appearance of soft gentle rain.”.

On either side of the Longhair Manas is a rain cloud pattern and a frog with lightning.  Both are symbolic of rain and prosperity.  Separating the two sections are larger panels of Hopi-Tewa designs.  Each of the squares has a different design from classic Hopi-Tewa pottery. The jar is painted with various clay slips along with bee-weed, which is black.  It was traditionally fired and it is signed on the bottom with a feather and “Rainy”.  Rainy has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Market and her work continues to be a creative inspiration in Hopi-Tewa pottery.
