Naha, Rainy – Red Tail Hawk Jar

6.75"w x 5"h

$ 1,250.00

Rainy Naha learned to make pottery from her mother, Helen “Featherwoman” Naha.  Rainy continues is a similar style using a white clay slip as the foundation for her work.  This wide shoulder jar is based on the traditional Hopi storage jars, which were similar in form. The jar has four sections each with the red tail hawk tail feather design descending down from the rim to below the shoulder.  On the sides of the tail design are the red “wing” patterns.  The central section of the tail is designed with a variety of Hopi-Tewa designs, including an eternity band, rain, lightning and cloud patterns. Rainy uses natural clay slips (bee-weed for the black) and a white kaolin clay.  Each of her pieces is also traditionally fired which gives the white a very pearlescent appearance.  It is signed on the bottom with a feather and “Rainy”.
