Namingha, Les – “Rhythm” Jar with Bird Wing Designs

7"w x 7.75"h

$ 4,000.00

This is a striking jar by Les Namingha. The jar has a high round shoulder and a short neck. It is a shape for which Les is famous in his pottery as the high shoulder creates a lot of design space.  The unpainted area has mica mixed into the paint to create both the dark brown color and a great texture. The jar has a repetitive design of bird wings and black squares encircling the piece.  Each row has the bird wings going in a different direction.  There is a “rhythm” to their flight in both sound and motion.  Think of a flock of birds flying and then suddenly all changing course.  It is mesmerizing, much like this design.  While the squares all seem black, brown, and white, there is an underlying layer of a purple or mauve coloration that shows through subtly in some areas.  Above the bird wings are star designs and below are angular cloud patterns.  It is a visually striking and complex jar.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Les Namingha  2021”.
