Namingha, Les – “Zuni Rain” Large Jar
Les Namingha is known for his modernistic shaped vessels and painted designs. He learned to make pottery from his aunt, Dextra Quotskuyva. This large jar is a more classic Zuni shape with the round shoulder and the elongated neck. However, it is the shape which lends itself to the amazing design. The jar has geometric and fine-line designs which encompass the surface. These designs are inspired by the classic Zuni jar with the rain designs. They are very geometric in shape. Surrounding them are bold geometric patterns painted and slipped with mica. There are Hopi birds on the surface which add one more dramatic layer to the jar. The light sparkle of the mica and the detail in the painted designs works perfectly on this large jar! It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Les Namingha” 2019.
