Nampeyo, Camille “Hisi” – Jar with Sikyatki Birds (1994)

5.5"w x 4.5"h

$ 1,200.00

This is a spectacular jar by Camille “Hisi” Nampeyo.  She learned to make pottery from her mother, Dextra Quotskuyva.  She is a sister of noted painter Dan Namingha and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano, Annie Healing and Rachel Nampeyo.  She is known for her use of traditional imagery and the delicate painting of her designs.  This jar has an elegant shape with a wide shoulder and a short neck.  The jar is polished red on the neck and shoulder.  The red makes a step cloud design on two sides.  The other two sides have large stylized Hopi birds.  The birds are also slipped with white and red clay. Note the VERY thin lines used throughout the jar! There are also small etched wind patterns in the black band surrounding the red area.  The black is painted with bee-weed.  The jar is traditionally fired to create the fire clouds on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
