$ 115.00

Carla Claw Nampeyo is a daughter of noted potter Thomas Polacca and a niece of Fannie Nampeyo. She is also a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano. Her brother is Gary Polacca and she is married to Raul Claw (Navajo).  She is known for her incised pottery and the use of slips that give the appearance of wood to the surface of her pottery. This tall seepdot has a Butterfly Maiden as the design. She is depicted holding a bowl of cornmeal and with butterfly wings.  The opposite side has geometric designs and slipped to look like wood.  It is said of the Butterfly Maiden:

Palhik Mana is a Butterfly Maiden, not a Katsina, but a woman dancer. She generally appears in August, as that is when the butterflies appear. The Butterfly Dance, a traditional social dance of the Hopi, is held in August after the gathering of the harvest and presentation of the Snake Dance. It is a thanksgiving dance for the harvest, chiefly for the corn crop and features dancing by young Hopi girls.

The jar is signed on the bottom, “Carla Nampeyo”.
