Nampeyo, Fannie – Corrugated Water Jar with Eagle Tail (1925-35), “Hopi Villages” Sticker

5"w x 4.5"h

$ 1,800.00

This is a historically interesting water jar by Fannie Nampeyo. She was the youngest daughter of noted potter Nampeyo of Hano and also the mother of noted potters Iris Nampeyo, Leah Nampeyo, and Thomas Polacca.  She was certainly among the most skilled of her generation for painting designs pottery.  This jar is around with a corrugated neck.  This style of vessel is often associated with Nampeyo of Hano (Fannie’s mother), who would make corrugated pieces when she could no longer see, and Fannie would paint the designs. The jar is a bit off-center, which also makes one think it could have been made by Nampeyo of Hano.  The jar has a bird tail and bird wing patterns painted with bee-weed and clay slips.  There is a Fred Harvey “From the Hopi Villages” sticker on the side. This style of the sticker was used in the 1920s to 1930s at Fred Harvey stores, and especially with Nampeyo family pottery at the Grand Canyon Hopi house.  The jar was traditionally fired so that it has some visually striking blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Fannie Nampeyo” and it is in very good with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
