Nampeyo, Fannie – Jar with Hopi Birds (1960’s)

5.75"w x 3.75"h

$ 975.00

This jar by Fannie Nampeyo is a classic shape with a round shoulder and short neck.  It is painted with two Hopi-style birds that encircle the piece.  The central panel of designs is the tail feathers, while to the right is the bird’s head and to the left is the tail.  It is a design that Fannie’s mother, Nampeyo of Hano, revived from the ancient Sikyatki pottery.  Interestingly, the style of the bird imagery is almost Picasso-esque in its fragmentation and placement of the design elements.  Note as well the various areas of the hatchwork lines in the design! The jar was traditionally fired creating striking color variations on the surface.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Fannie Nampeyo” and an ear of corn (for the Corn Clan).  It is from the 1960s.
