Naranjo, Celestina – Polychrome Engagement Basket (1950s)
Celestina Tafoya Naranjo was a daughter of Pasqualita Tafoya and a niece of Sarafina Tafoya. She began making pottery in the 1930s and continued through the 1980s. This engagement basket is one of the larger pieces of her work we have had. The piece is fully polished, even the handles! The body of the piece is polychrome painted with a rain and cloud design. The blue/gray colored slip was on which was popular at Santa Clara in the 1950’s. The piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Celestina”.
