Naranjo, Christina – Jar with Carved Avanyu (1940s)

5.5"w x 5.75"h

$ 650.00

This jar is a classic piece by Christina Naranjo.   Christina was a sister of Margaret Tafoya and Camilio Tafoya, as well as the matriarch of the family of potters including Teresita Naranjo and Tammy Garcia. This jar has a tall shape and it is carved with an avanyu around the center of the piece.  The avanyu is a classic Tewa design and note how the tongue and tail overlap. The jar is fully polished.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Christina Naranjo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There is a small rough area near the rim, that is more felt than seen. Interestingly, the original “$3.00” is in pencil on the bottom. The jar has an interesting provenance as it was purchased by the owner’s mother who was a Harvey Girl at the LaFonda Hotel in the 1940s.  Definitely a great piece of history!
